A new brewing venture is bubbling up in Harris.

Plans are underway for a new Hebridean craft brewery in Harris, producing a range of refreshing, distinctive, local beers whilst giving locals and tourists alike a full Hebridean experience through beer tastings and tours.

Over time to come, with brand growth, they hope to create a space that provides a range of quality Hebridean foods.

The venture’s Head Brewer is set to be Calum Bennett. A fluent Gaelic speaker, who grew up on the Isle of Mull, he is currently studying Brewing and Distilling at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh; one of the most prestigious brewing courses in the UK, attended by Martin Dickie, the founder of the hugely successful Aberdeenshire-based brewery, BrewDog.

Jamie McGowan, founder of Essence of Harris, and Rob McKinnon, are the drivers behind the idea which they have named “Loomshed”, and they intend to start up the journey in Tarbert later in the year. After a long business career, Rob now runs a five-star self-catering cottage in Seilebost, Harris and is a Director of Outer Hebrides Tourism.

Jamie says: “We have been working hard behind the scenes, and are seeking help from HIE and Business Gateway, to build a brand which we will be proud of when it arrives onto our shores very soon.

“Receiving, guidance and input from HIE and Business Gateway has helped us shape Loomshed into a brand with tremendous potential on the islands and beyond.”

For Jamie the key point is that this project will create jobs and sustainability. “My overall aim is to promote the wealth of opportunities available in the Outer Hebrides, highlighting to both kids and families that you can build a career, and a future, here on Harris.”
